Okay, I have to publish a theme to do so. Okay, so I just want to change some colors in my IDE. Taking a Sledgehammer to Crack a Nut □□ To be fair, building the plugin is very quick, the only thing that took such a long time was the verification, because it actually tries to verify my code against multiple versions of JetBrains IDE, which is a good thing. Clear separation of concerns, rapid development with little overhead, small memory footprint (all of which is only true unless npm install of course). High-speed rail is a long-term urban project.Cities in the Central Valley have the most to gain from concerted placemaking and identity-building efforts, which can help make these cities destinations, rather than places to pass through. And thinking of each city as part of a unified vision for the statewide network can open up new ways to experience the diversity of California. Local placemaking efforts can also help establish a city’s unique identity. The vision of high-speed rail can only be accomplished if we think of the station cities as a set of destinations that function better when connected.Īt the local level, stations and the neighborhoods around them can be great urban places where people choose to spend their time - whether or not they ride the train. When completed, the high-speed rail network will connect eight of the 10 largest cities in California. At the network level, this investment creates fast new connections between places that were not previously connected. High-speed rail creates a network of places at multiple scales that reinforce each other, creating a key opportunity for station cities. “A station is a piece of the city that is welcoming to the traveler.” - Andreas Heym “If high-speed rail arrives and nothing is there, then people will go somewhere else.” - Andreas Heym, Founder, Andreas Heym Planning and Design This article draws out some of the key themes and best practices we learned about, along with the concrete steps station cities and the authority can take to get the most from this generational investment. Over the summer and fall of 2021, SPUR, in partnership with the California High-Speed Rail Authority, produced a series of webinars to help the California High-Speed Rail Authority and station cities on their planning journey for high-speed rail stations and station areas. By directing development in and around neighborhoods in station cities, California high-speed rail can also help stop sprawl and preserve the natural environment and greenfield areas under threat of development. By orienting more growth around these stations, cities in the network can also provide a foundation for how the state grows more sustainably in a world with a warming climate and more frequent, more damaging fires. Stations can be anchors of public life and act as the “front door” to the cities along the route. High-speed rail is more than a fast train. Map courtesy of California High-Speed Rail Authority Residents of Fresno will be about an hour and a half away from both San Francisco and Los Angeles, as opposed to up to three hours away by car. When complete, California’s high-speed rail system will fundamentally change people’s mental map of the state by making more places more accessible. ![]() High-speed rail is currently under construction in the Central Valley. In 2008, California voters agreed to devote approximately $9.95 billion to develop a high-speed rail system that would connect the agricultural communities of the San Joaquin Valley - such as Merced, Fresno, Kings/Tulare and Bakersfield - with the coastal cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles. An electrified train could help address air pollution in a region with some of the worst air quality in the country and create a clean way to travel across the state. A fast connection between the San Joaquin Valley and the coast could create significant economic growth to uplift cities along the route. A majority of California’s voters continue to support high-speed rail and the vision it can help the state achieve. Beginning in the 1970s, California’s leaders started to envision a way to connect the dense, urban coastal areas of the Bay Area and Southern California with the San Joaquin Valley via high-speed rail. And when these moments are presented out of context, the assertion gains force. Butler, the old films are rich with relationships, dialogue, glances and other bits of action susceptible to interpretation as being freighted with homosexuality. Rappaport's film makes the unsurprising point that at a time when American society at large preferred that homosexuality remain hidden, so did its films. With a narration by Dan Butler, who is described in the publicity materials as an outspokenly gay actor and who plays the womanizer on the hit sitcom ''Frasier,'' Mr. Written, directed and edited by Mark Rappaport, ''The Silver Screen: Color Me Lavender'' is another of the so-called cinematic essays by the filmmaker, whose previous works include ''Rock Hudson's Home Movies'' (1992) and ''From the Journals of Jean Seberg'' (1995). Lavenderįor something a little more exotic, why not try Lavender. The film is named Lavender Hill, a street in Battersea where the pair live, which was so titled due to the lavender fields that existed there in Victorian times. However, things go awry when the gold statues become mixed in with a group of ordinary statues, leading to a frantic chase as Henry and Alfred try to recover the gold without their crime being detected. The pair realise that if Alfred melts the stolen gold into miniature statues of the Eiffel Tower, it could be smuggled safely to France and sold on. However, Henry harbours dreams of becoming rich and hatches a plan to steal the gold when he makes the acquaintance of the artist, Alfred Pendlebury (Stanley Holloway). Henry Holland (Guinness) has been trusted with delivering gold bullion for 20 years and is considered a safe pair of hands by his employers. The Lavender Hill Mob is a 1951 comedy starring Alec Guinness as a mild-mannered bank clerk whose sudden compulsion to rob the bank he works for causes all manner of chaos. The Widdington sisters nurse him back to health, but have no idea the disruption that this talented young man will cause to both them and the community they live in. A gifted young Polish violinist from Krakow, Andrea is bound for America when he is swept overboard by a storm. I know Roon has DSP fun built in, but after experimenting, I’m sticking with no EQ/DSP processing. Have some nice image depth streaming Mile’s Davis “Filles de Kilimanjaro” At this moment at least, Roon and the new DAC have decided to play nice with each other and deliver me some musical enjoyment. In that case, I move over to Audirvana, which always connects to the DAC, no problem. Some times Roon does not see it (!) when connected direct to the macbook core, and just wants to use the computer’s system output (not as good a sound as direct connection to DAC). One issue is that I have a new DAC (Denafrips Ares II). I will say that with the latests updates, Audirvana sounds great, but I felt that 1.8 Roon was also a possible step forward when I first heard it (streaming via Iphone, with my macbook as the core). I’m going to do some comparisons the next few days, both with my electrostatic speakers and good quality headphones. I’ve been using Audirvana for a few years now, and Roon for at least 1.5 to 2 years (at one point, I thought Roon was supposed to have better sound. But if you ask me - best is to get both and see your listening habit - which one you use most.I’d like to know how others feel as well. I like Roon better - Roon shows Tidal My Mixes (With AS I have had to set these as my Playlists). Library - it is best to wait for AS to iron out the glitches. Also - AS tells me exactly what bitrate and bit depth I am streaming - Roon kinda does and kinda doesn’t. I have a Roon end point in one room and I don’t have it in another and I don’t plan on buying - so AS fills that gap perfectly. The most popular alternative is CPod Roon vs jriver Moode audio setup. I did find the DSD / EQ capabilities of Roon quite nice, and let me match my speakers, remove boom and lift the bass in the digital domain. Roon is usually light on the server, except for upsampling. Audirvana is still work in progress and has some serious road to cover. vs Audirvana running on a fanless PC (like a NUC) with a audiophile USB card. I love Roon, but in my case, upsampling did not sound very good, to either PCM or DSD. User Interface - Roon is definitely better. Sound quality - seriously - we are comparing hi-res vs hi-res - you really need serious dog ears to tell. But if you don’t have - Audirvana is a great way of getting unfolded MQA straight to your AVR up to 96kHz -which ain’t bad at all. If you already have a nice fancy endpoint that tickles your ears better, Roon can be a good addition. The Tidal integration is smooth and great, and that Tidal integration carries over to the remote app seamlessly. Audirvana has the most developed, cleanest interface with the most back-end stability that Ive seen so far. And disconnecting/connecting or logging out/logging in gets a bit of a nuisance rather quickly.Īudirvana vs Roon: Roon requires an end point (at least in my case - Roon cannot see my AVR). Amarra is a mess, Roon is too expensive for just this application. Which is a bit meh if you have 2 rooms to supply with music. So by then I hope to be able to make a decision which one to keep.ĭownside on both programs is that each only allows one source to play music at any given time. There’s no simple way to compare the sound of the two. Once I learned how to deploy Roon properly, I found that it sounds as good or better than Audirvana, depending on the network bridge. Then, I learned that Roon does not perform well that way. My sub for AS expires in May next year, and Roon in June. I also found that Audirvana sounds better than Roon when both are installed on my MacBook Pro. And the speakers in the “Office” are quite a bit better soundquality wise compared to the living room’s Harman Kardon 5.1 set that came with my Harman Kardon receiver way back. Usually, computer audio playback consists of a sequence of independent tasks. This digital playback process is the heart of the software and has been continuously improved over the last 10 years, on both PC and MAC. In my work/game place, where my 2 Windows laptops reside, Roon is running the show.ĭiscovering music is so much better on a laptop compared to scrolling on a phone screen. Like Roon, Audirvana articulates around a proprietary Kernel, made to ensure the best digital audio playback performance from a computer. Local music on an SD card, and Internet music through online Radio stations and Qobuz. ![]() Until now Roon was quite ahead of AS, but with the new Remote it gets more even.Īt the moment AS is running on my MacBook Air in the living room and I’m using my Android to use as remote control through the Remote app. As I’ve mentioned earlier I have a year sub on both AS and Roon. Put simply, kaidan literally means "a narrative of the strange." While tales of strange phenomena in the kaidan mold existed prior to the Edo period (1600-1867), the appellation "kaidan" does not appear in extant historical records until the seventeenth century. Although kaidan need not evoke fear in the minds of those who hear them, frequently they include elements of horror as well as a revenge motif Etymologically, the character kai in kaidan means "strange, mysterious, rare, or bewitching apparition," while dan is similar in meaning to hanashi or katari or katari (i.e., "talk," or "recited narrative"). IN JAPAN TODAY THE GENERAL term for frightening ghost stories is kaidan. Keywords: kaidan-kaidan-shu-storytelling-entertainment-Edo Japan By tracing the kaidan-shu from its emergence in the early Edo period up to the appearance of Ugetsu monogatari, this paper will demonstrate how kaidan liter ature of the Edo period (1600-1867) moves away from the religious and didactic, toward the secular. At the same time, the artistry of kaidan attained a zenith in Kinko kaidan (Kaidan Present and Past) and Ugetsu monogatari (Tales of Moonlight and Rain, 1776), a collection of nine short stories of the supernatural written by Ueda Akinari (1734-1809). In the middle of the eighteenth century, the production of kaidan literature reached one of its peaks. It was only during the Edo period that these stories were collected, compiled, and published under the rubric of kaidan as kaidan-shu (collections of kaidan). Written Stories that fit the kaidan mold have been part of Japanese literature since ancient times, but they were not identified apart from the rest. Many contemporary Japanese regard stories of the kaidan genre as frightening ghost stories.
